Privacy Policy
What the Paper Sky app does with your information. It is a climbing game for every age, so the answer is: as little as possible.
Paper Sky ("the app") is a climbing game for Android phones and iPhones published by Studio Procrast ("we", "us"), in which an origami frog bounces up the pages of a pop-up book. This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and what choices you have.
Everything below describes what Paper Sky actually does, not what an app of this type might do.
Summary
Paper Sky has no accounts, no sign-in, no cloud storage and no analytics. We do not collect, store or send any personal information about you to servers of our own, because we do not run any. Your settings and best climbs stay on your phone.
The game is free because it shows ads from Google AdMob, and showing ads means your phone shares some information with Google. Paper Sky is for players of every age, so we treat every player as if they might be a child: ads are never personalised, your phone's advertising ID is never used, and every ad is suitable for all ages. The details are below.
1. Information stored on your phone
The app saves a few small things locally so it can remember them between launches:
| What | Stored value |
|---|---|
| Sounds, and the separate bounce, stomp and falling sounds | On or off |
| Music | On or off |
| Vibration | On or off |
| Steering by tilting | On or off |
| Your best climbs | Your top five heights, as numbers only |
| Climbs since the last full-screen ad | A number, so those ads appear no more than once every five climbs |
| An unfinished climb | The height of a climb the app closed on, so it can be added to your best climbs next time |
These are kept in the operating system's standard app storage (SharedPreferences on Android, UserDefaults on iPhone). They stay on your phone, are not sent anywhere, cannot be read by us, and are deleted when you remove the app. On Android, Paper Sky opts out of Android's app backup. On iPhone, like any app's data, they may be included in your own iCloud or computer backup.
In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, Google's consent tool may also store your ad consent choices on your phone (see section 5).
Steering by tilting. If you switch it on, the app reads your phone's motion sensor while you play to steer the frog. That reading is used on the spot and is never stored or sent anywhere.
2. Advertising
Paper Sky shows two kinds of ads, supplied by Google AdMob: an optional video you can choose to watch after a climb ends to keep climbing, and a full-screen ad between climbs, no more than once every five climbs.
Every ad is suitable for children. Because Paper Sky is for every age and does not ask how old you are, every ad request is marked both as directed at children and as coming from someone under the age of consent. As a result, for every player:
- Google does not show personalised ads or ads based on your activity in other apps (remarketing);
- your advertising ID is never used: on Android the app does not request the advertising ID permission, and on iPhone it never uses Apple's Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) or asks for permission to track you;
- ads are limited to content rated suitable for all ages.
To show and measure ads, Google may still receive and process:
- Identifiers limited to this app or to apps from the same developer (on Android the app set ID), never the advertising ID;
- Your IP address, and the approximate (city or region level) location derived from it;
- Device and app information: phone model, operating system version, app version, language and country;
- Ad interaction data: that an ad was shown, viewed or tapped;
- Diagnostic data, such as crash logs and performance information from Google's advertising software.
This information is collected by Google, not by us. We only see overall figures, such as total ads shown and revenue, which do not identify individual players.
Google uses this data to serve ads, to limit how often you see the same ad, and to detect invalid traffic and fraud. Google's own policies apply:
- Google Privacy Policy
- How Google uses information from partner sites and apps
- Google Advertising policies
On iPhone the app also supports Apple's SKAdNetwork, which lets advertisers learn that an ad led to an app being installed without identifying you or your phone.
3. Fonts and other content
Paper Sky's font (Fredoka), pictures, sounds and music are all inside the app. Nothing is downloaded to show them, so no request is made to Google Fonts or any other service.
4. What the app does not do
To be explicit, Paper Sky does not:
- Ask for or access your location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, calendar, health data or files;
- Require or offer an account, or ask for your name, age, email address or any other personal detail;
- Use your phone's advertising ID or ask for permission to track you;
- Contain analytics, crash reporting or attribution software of our own;
- Offer in-app purchases;
- Sell or share personal information, including as those terms are defined under United States state privacy laws.
5. Your choices
Ad consent (EEA, UK and Switzerland). In these regions, Google's consent tool may ask for your choices the first time you open Paper Sky. Whatever you choose, ads in Paper Sky are never personalised. Where the tool applies, you can change or withdraw your choice at any time from Settings → Privacy choices inside the app; that row appears only where it is needed.
Tracking. There is nothing to switch off: Paper Sky never tracks you across other companies' apps and websites.
Sounds, music and vibration. All can be turned off in the app's settings.
All local data. Removing the app removes everything it saved. There is nothing stored elsewhere for us to delete.
6. Legal basis (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies:
- Storing your settings and best climbs is necessary to provide the game you asked for (Article 6(1)(b), performance of a contract);
- Showing non-personalised ads relies on our legitimate interest in keeping the game free (Article 6(1)(f));
- Where the law requires consent for storing or reading information on your phone for advertising, Google's consent tool asks for it, and you can withdraw it at any time as described in section 5 (Article 6(1)(a)).
For processing Google carries out as a controller in its own right, Google decides the legal basis; see Google's privacy policy linked above.
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, and the right to complain to your local supervisory authority. In the Netherlands that is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens. Because we hold no personal data ourselves, requests about advertising data should go to Google; we will help where we can.
7. Children
Paper Sky is made for players of all ages, including children. We do not ask for anyone's age and do not collect personal information from anyone, at any age. Every player is treated as a child: all ads are marked as directed at children, as the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and Google's policies require, and as coming from someone under the age of digital consent, as European law requires. So for everyone there are no personalised ads, no use of the advertising ID, no tracking, and only ads suitable for all ages. On Google Play, Paper Sky follows the Families policy and uses only Google AdMob, which is certified for it.
Parents and guardians with questions, or who want help, can contact us at any time.
8. Data retention and security
We hold no personal data, so there is nothing for us to keep or lose. Data held by Google is kept according to Google's own retention schedules and is sent to Google encrypted. Information stored on your phone stays there until you remove the app.
9. International transfers
Google may process advertising data on servers outside your country, including in the United States, using transfer mechanisms such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. See Google's privacy policy for details.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the "Last updated" date above and post the new version at the same address. Changes that affect how data is used will also be mentioned in the app's release notes on Google Play and the App Store.
